Spanning the Tigris in the heart of Mosul, the Old Bridge has long linked the historic right bank with the left. Damaged during the recent conflict and since repaired, it remains a busy artery and a favourite place to watch the great river roll past the old city.

    The Boat-Bridges Before the Iron Span

    Before the iron bridge opened in 1934, Mosul crossed the Tigris on pontoon bridges — lines of about thirty boats lashed together, described by European travellers as far back as the 1500s. The steel span replaced a way of meeting the river that was centuries old.
