Bridge of Al Ramadi Dam
The Ramadi Barrage spans the Euphrates just above the city — a low dam and road bridge built to regulate the river and feed the canals of Anbar. Its long line of sluice gates is one of Ramadi's landmarks, and the calm water it holds back draws anglers and evening strollers to the riverbank.

The Gates on the River
The barrage's long row of steel sluice gates lets engineers raise and lower the Euphrates, sending water into the canals of Anbar and on toward Lake Habbaniyah. Crossing the bridge along its top gives a fine view up and down the river.

The River Held Back
The Ramadi Barrage is a two-section diversion dam on the Euphrates, opened in the mid-1950s. Its northern section slows or stops the river so that water can be channelled through the southern section into a canal feeding nearby Lake Habbaniyah, making it a key piece of Iraq's water management.
