Habbaniyah Tourist Village

Opened in 1981 on the shore of Lake Habbaniyah, the Tourist Village was built to resemble a French seaside resort, with around 300 hotel rooms and 500 lakeside bungalows. In its 1980s heyday it was the most glamorous holiday spot in Iraq, drawing celebrated singers and actors, before the years of war saw it shelter thousands of displaced families; partial restoration has since begun.
