Imam Husayn Shrine

Old City — Bayn al-Haramayn
About

The gold-domed shrine of Imam Husayn, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is the spiritual heart of Karbala and one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. Built over the grave of the imam killed here in 680 CE, its mirror-filled halls and vast courtyards draw pilgrims around the clock — and tens of millions during the annual Arba'een walk.

5 stops to discover

  1. 1

    The Holy Tomb (Darih)

Beneath the golden dome stands the darih — the ornate silver-and-gold lattice enclosing the grave of Imam Husayn. Pilgrims move slowly around it, reaching to touch the metalwork and offering their salaam to the martyr of Karbala. This is the emotional heart of any visit.

  2. 2

The Place of the Martyrs (Qatlgah)

Within the shrine lies the ground remembered as the spot where Husayn and his companions fell in 680 CE. A place of quiet mourning, it is where the story of Karbala feels most immediate and present.

  3. 3

    The Grave of the Seventy-Two

At the very foot of Imam Husayn's tomb lies a communal grave holding the seventy-two companions and family members who fell beside him on Ashura in 680 CE. As you stand here, you are above the resting place of an entire band of martyrs gathered into a single sacred ground.

  4. 4

    Husayn's Two Sons

Within the burial chamber rest Husayn's two sons who died at Karbala: the young Ali al-Akbar, and the six-month-old infant Ali al-Asghar. To visit them is to feel the human scale of the tragedy, where even a nursing baby was counted among the slain.

  5. 5

    Beneath the Golden Dome

Directly over Husayn's grave rises a gold-covered dome about 27 metres high, ringed by twelve windows, sheltering the silver-and-gold zarih that pilgrims press toward to pray. This glowing canopy has been rebuilt and embellished by Buyid, Safavid, Ottoman and Qajar hands across a thousand years.
