Carpet of Wind Monument
The Carpet of Wind statue is one of the most iconic works by the late Iraqi sculptor Mohammed Ghani Hikmat. It depicts a timeless tale from One Thousand and One Nights, showing a couple seated on a magical carpet in a pose that suggests motion and flight as if they are just about to soar into the sky.
The sculpture reveals intricate details in clothing and facial expressions, reflecting a delicate balance between dream and reality, between heritage and myth, between roots and aspiration. It does not merely narrate an old story it evokes the human desire to rise, explore, and open up to the world.
Completed in 1989, more than three decades ago, the statue stands as a vivid example of Mohammed Ghani Hikmat’s deep passion for Arab heritage and his ongoing effort to weave it into the modern urban landscape of Baghdad.
