Al Aghawat Mosque

Old City
About

Al Agawat Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Abu Ubayda Al Jarrah, is one of Iraq's historical and archaeological mosques, located in the Bab Al Jisr area near the Maydan and close to the Old Bridge on the right bank of old Mosul, covering an area of 2,500 square meters.

Its construction dates back to 1114 AH/1702 CE, and it is considered one of the heritage mosques built by the Jalili family before they assumed governance of Mosul. It was built by Khalil Agha, Ibrahim Agha, and Ismail Agha, sons of Abd Al Jalil Agha, one of the princes of the Jalili family.

Inside the sanctuary is a Quran reciters' assembly and a large magnificent dome resting on four small domes surrounded by eight domes. The mosque also contains a religious school in the form of an octagonal room, whose construction was dated by Mulla Jirjis ibn Darwish Al Mawsili in verses of poetry still written on a stone fixed in the school's front wall, the sum of the letters of the second hemistich of each verse forming its construction date of 1114 AH.

With its white dome, the mosque is considered one of the most distinctive sacred structures in Mosul, reflecting the image of Iraq's ethnic and religious diversity and working to protect cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence between religions.

The mosque suffered significant damage during ISIS's control of Mosul. After liberation, UNESCO in cooperation with the Rehab Nineveh company undertook its rehabilitation, with restoration works relying on the minaret's original bricks after sorting the friezes and cornices collected from the rubble and reusing them in the minaret's body, meticulous efforts reflecting the care to preserve the mosque's authentic archaeological character and restore it to the historical form the people of Mosul have known.
