Al Mujahidi (Al Khidr) Mosque

Old City
About

Al Mujahidi Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Al Khidr or the Red Mosque, is one of the oldest religious landmarks in the ancient city of Mosul, standing majestically for more than eight centuries on the banks of the Tigris River, bearing witness to the city's history and the splendor of its Islamic architecture.

The mosque was founded in 576 AH/1180 CE by Abu Mansur Qaymaz Al Rumi, nicknamed "Mujahid Al Din," who was the governor of the Mosul Citadel at that time. It is distinguished by its strategic location in the southern part of Mosul at the head of the Liberty Bridge on the right bank of the Tigris River, making it a major stop for travelers and merchants throughout the ages.

In 580 AH/1184 CE, the Andalusian traveler Ibn Jubayr visited Mosul and prayed in the mosque, expressing the utmost admiration for what he witnessed of its beautiful location, fine engineering, and varied ornamentations. He described it saying: "One of the city's princes has built within it a mosque on the bank of the Tigris, I see no mosque more splendid in construction. Description falls short of it and its decoration and arrangement, all of it carved in brick. As for its sanctuary, it brings to mind the sanctuaries of paradise, and it is surrounded by iron windows connected to benches overlooking the Tigris, no seat more noble than them nor more beautiful."

In the Atabeg era in 541 AH, Sayf ibn Ghazi expanded it and added important architectural elements. Then Hajj Muhammad Musaffi Al Dhahab restored part of the mosque to life, and it was thereafter named the Musaffi Mosque.

The mosque suffered significant damage during ISIS's control of Mosul between 2014 and 2017. After liberation, civil associations and organizations undertook its reconstruction, with restoration works preserving the Mosul semicircular arches and the materials used, employing the same stones that were previously there, returning it to its authentic archaeological style.
