Prophet George Mosque
The Mosque of Prophet Jirjis (George) is one of the oldest mosques in the city of Mosul, located on Suq Al Sha'arin Street on the right bank of the old city, with the surrounding area also bearing its name.
A small mosque was built on the site dating back to 1127 CE, the sixth Hijri century. The Andalusian traveler Ibn Jubayr visited it and historians documented it. The Jalili family established a school within it known as the Jirjisiyya School, with the oldest mention of this school dating to 1082 AH/1671 CE.
The mosque contains a shrine said to be that of Prophet Jirjis (George), and successive renovation and expansion works were carried out on its construction through the centuries until it became one of Mosul's most prominent religious and historical landmarks. The construction in its form preceding the explosion dates back to the third Hijri century.
In July 2014, ISIS proceeded to detonate the mosque under the pretext of the presence of graves within it, during its control of Mosul between 2014 and 2017.
After the liberation of the city, the people of Mosul rose to revive this ancient monument. On the ninth of March 2024, the Mosque of Prophet Jirjis was reopened after its reconstruction by the Association of Lovers of Good through the donations of benefactors, returning splendor and spirit to the right bank of ancient Mosul, reaffirming once again the insistence of the city's people on reclaiming their civilizational identity and historical legacy that had long suffered destruction.
