Prophet Seth Mosque

The Mosque of Prophet Shith (Seth) is one of Iraq's historical and archaeological mosques in the city of Mosul, with its construction dating back to 1057 AH/1647 CE, when Mustafa Pasha Al Nishanji assumed the governorship of Mosul, a governor known for his asceticism and piety.

He saw in a dream that Prophet Shith appeared to him and pointed to his grave, so he ordered Hajj Ali ibn Al Nawma, one of Mosul's merchants, to dig at the spot he had seen in the dream. He dug and brought out the grave, built a structure with a dome over it, and it became known as the Shrine of Prophet Shith. A casket and a curtain were placed for it, and the family of Hajj Ali ibn Al Nawma became responsible for and overseeing the shrine.

In 1206 AH/1791 CE, a mosque was built beside it where the five daily prayers were held, becoming known as the Mosque of Prophet Shith. After that, Ahmad Pasha ibn Sulayman Pasha Al Jalili rebuilt it.

On Friday the twenty-fifth of July 2014, the people of Mosul were devastated when ISIS members rigged the Mosque of Prophet Shith with explosives and detonated it, reducing it with its towering minaret to rubble.

After the liberation of the city, the mosque was completely rebuilt and reopened on the ninth of March 2024. The reconstruction was carried out by the Mosul Charitable Works Association under the presidency of Dr. Sa'adallah Tawfiq Sulayman, designed and supervised by Dr. Ahmad Yusuf Al Omari, and restored to as close as possible to its original architectural style, details, and visual character, with additions and improvements to address aspects that had previously been incomplete. These included adding arcades to complete the containment of the mosque's courtyard, an events hall dedicated to the jurisprudential complex, a women's prayer hall on the first floor, expansion of ablution areas and sanitary facilities, and the addition of housing for the imam and the mosque's caretaker to ensure proper management. The number of columns in the interior space was also reduced from fifteen to eight.
