Baghdadi Heritage Museum
The sarraj is the artisan specialized in crafting and fitting saddles for horses and other riding animals—a deeply rooted traditional profession that was once widespread in Iraq and the Arab world. This craft goes beyond functionality; it is an essential part of equestrian culture, reflecting a special concern for both the rider’s comfort and the horse’s beauty.
Saddles are handcrafted using leather, wood, and metal, and are sometimes adorned with intricate engravings that highlight the saddler’s skill and artistic sense. The word sarraj comes from sarg (saddle), the mounted seat placed on a horse’s back for riding, and considered one of the most important elements of a rider’s gear.
With the advent of modern transportation and the rise of automobiles, this profession declined in urban areas. However, it remains alive in rural regions and among horse breeders and equestrian enthusiasts who continue to preserve traditional saddles as symbols of authentic heritage.
